The Palmela 2011 organization is pleased to announce an exhibit by Joergen Geerds as part of Palmela 2011 – The International Panoramic Photography Festival.

This exhibit will be one of the highlights of the Palmela 2011 Festival and will be on display at the Palmela Castle Pousada from June to August, 2011.

Lumin-o-City

Cities like New York and Chicago offer an unequaled range of luminosity. They glow under many hypnotic sources of light—from apartments, street lamps, the accent lights of buildings, construction rigs, cars, and more. This luminosity is a gift for a photographer who wants to record the full range of human activity.

Cities also offer an unparalleled opportunity to capture both the grand monument-scapes that form the backdrop of modern life as well as its quieter, more intimate moments. This gives Geerds the opportunity to move the whole art of panoramas in a different direction: to take it out of the classical, natural setting—getting away from photographs of mountaintops and fields—and plunk it down in an urban zone full of its own high mountains and canyons—skyscrapers, billboards, avenues, and streets.

Geerds’s panoramas illuminate places familiar to many, both on the macro and micro scales. But these photos also make viewers think about how and where they were taken, and deeply consider what it is about these at-first familiar haunts that so captures our attention.

This is Joergen Geerds’ first panoramic photography exhibition in Europe after many successful shows in the NYC metro region.

Born 1969, Oberstreu, Germany, Resides in Astoria, New York, USA.

Studied design and communication in the University for Applied Science, Würzburg, Germany.

 

Inspired by the grandeur and grime of New York City, Joergen Geerds branched into panoramic photography in 2006.

Prior to finding his calling in panoramas, Geerds studied photography and design under Ernst Weckert and Nicolai Sarafov in Würzburg, Germany. He moved to New York City in 2000—he had simply outgrown his hometown—and worked for several successful years as an art director in the advertising world.

During this time, he refined his love of wide-angle photography and ventured into the world of panoramas. He found the un-cropped cityscapes that his flattened, 360-degree photos revealed were unique in the market. This led him to develop his own distinct style—large-scale, hyper-wide night panoramas of New York City.

Geerds’s photos illuminate places familiar to many, both on the macro and micro scales. But these photos also make viewers think about how and where they were taken, and deeply consider what it is about these at-first familiar haunts that so captures our attention.

After showing his work in several art shows in Brooklyn, Geerds did not go unnoticed. Since 2008, he has been represented by 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel in Chelsea, NY.

Geerds also documents his ongoing panorama work on his blog at newyorkpanorama.com. His dedicated fine art photography can be found at luminous-newyork.com, while his commercial work can be found at joergengeerds.com.

Geerds maintains a lively dialogue with fellow artists and photographers across the globe, and he loves to stay at the very front of photography and technological progress in general.

Palmela 2011 Multimap

In the coming days we will be reviewing and updating the information there, specially from the extensive Palmela 2011 exhibitions program so that no one gets lost while attending the conference.

   The nodal point detection, verticality and calibration, overlay.
3. The creation of panoramas
   Creation of the mobile phone lens, sending the fisheye through email to be stitched online.
4. Functions of the smartphones for panoramas
   Creation, visualisation and sharing of the panoramas within the smartphone, tablets, importing professional pictures, hotspots, etc…

Matthias Taugwalder talk will focus on VR panoramas in print media, online media and on mobile devices. Interactive 360 degree VR panoramas have one specific feature, that is especially interesting for media and news publications: It is possible to show a location at a specific time to someone else.
May it be a remote location hard to reach or an exclusive event to cover, there is no other media that can supply this unique immersive experience.

The Swiss-based media company Ringier has several publications that make use of VR panoramas on news websites, iPhone or iPad applications.
Matthias Taugwalder will deliver some insights into applications of VR panoramas for media, based on specific projects and assignments.

Alexandre Jenny will present Panotour Pro, the new integrated virtual tour editor for the web and mobile. The talk will be divided into 3 main parts. First, an exploration of Panotour Pro and the new features of version 1.6. The second part is about 360° or partial video stitching and the solutions developed by Kolor. Finally, Alexandre Jenny will conclude with an amazing example that combines the best of both worlds: photography and video. A Q&A session will end this conference which you should definitely not miss.

• After some Law and Psychology studies in Lausanne and Zürich, he moved to Frankfurt entering the advertising Agency Abels & Partner. He started as assistant to the Creative director and owner, and soon after was in charge of running the creative team, special projects, customer relations and recipe conception.
• Back to Lugano, working as free-lance Corporate Identity and Communication consultant he realized that the web needed urgently the application of the CI principles to web sites, and that finally the time had come to commercially exploit QTVR, (a moment he was waiting for since 1992 when he saw the “Star Trek interactive Technical Manual”, the debut product for Apple’s Quicktime VR technology.
• After a specialization course in multimedia where he met his future partner Marco Luethi, in 1998 he founded Webidentity. It’s team created the VRWay vision which was embraced by a private investor and led in 2000 to the founding of VRWay. The Company’s headquarters are in Switzerland. Since 2009 the Company is listed in the AIM Market (Milan Stock Exchange).
• For many years editor in chief and Publisher of VRMag, the Virtual reality Magazine. 2003 saw the birth of Arounder.com. A travel site which enables an immersive journey which is the virtual prelude to real life experiences. At the end of 2009, following a development led by Johnny Vaccaro, VRWay launched Aroundertouch Iphone app, one year later the iPad version and in april 2011 Aroundertouch hit the Android Market. Other known VRWay publications are Panogames and Panodigg.

Selected by Apple to be installed, for the iPad2 launch, on the iPhones and iPad2 of all worldwide Apple Retail Stores. Uncover future developments of the app currently in the making, and share some thoughts about the VR photography business.

Ryan Whitehead will talk about his Nimbo Bay Experience. Craig Murray from Nimmobay invited Northstudio360 to their luxury adventure resort on Vancouver Island to shoot aerial panoramas as well as create an interactive virtual tour. While on location Ryan asked their permission to attempt to capture some footage to be used in an experimental 360 video. They supported this experiment fully, even though it was no small favor considering the cost of running a helicopter. The result? “The Nimmobay Experience”.
