Pousada de Setúbal, São Filipe Fortress
São Filipe’s Historic Pousada is in a fortress from the late XVII Century built by King Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal). This historic luxury hotel has a breathtaking view of the River Sado estuary. Regarding the city of Setúbal, it is one of Portugal’s main ports, it also offers beautiful walks within the historic city center and surroundings, such as the Sado river beaches and the Arrábida mountain range.
Setúbal is Portugal’s third largest port and still holds fish auctions every morning at the harbor. The old town has a number of interesting monuments, the most important being the Igreja (church) de Jesus. This church is considered to be the first Manueline, or Portuguese late Gothic, building and boasts an impressive doorway. Its twisted granite pillars were hewn and transported from what is now the nearby Arrabida Natural Park.
Setubal offers a rare opportunity to take a boat trip on the Sado estuary to see the bottle-nosed dolphins. The Arrabida Natural Park is 20 kilometres from Setúbal, it has a spectacular granite ridge and is a haven for wildlife. The Pousada de Setubal has a beautiful Baroque Chapel lined with azulejos (tiles) showing the life of St. Filipe.
The accommodations comprise a total of 16 rooms: 1 suite with twin bedroom and sea view, 7 twin bedrooms with view and 8 double rooms. The rooms all have a private bathroom, air conditioning, telephone, cable television, mini-bar, safe, hair dryer and bathing gowns. The hotel facilities include a restaurant, bar, terrace, snooker, family games and parking. The terrace affords excellent views over the port and the River Sado estuary.
